BIO:
Eddie,
"E.C." Joe, started climbing in the Southern Sierra in 1974. Rock
climbing at that time was undeveloped in the mountain and desert areas
near his hometown of Bakersfield. Eddie and his companions spent a
great deal of their time learning what exploratory, first ascent rock
climbing had in store for them.
Today, Eddie is known for pioneering many classic Sierra rock climbs:
White Punks' "...thought by some to be the best moderate route in the Southern Sierra." - "Southern Sierra
Rock Climbing, The Needles" by Moser, Vernon & Paul.
Romantic Warrior is included in & on the cover of "Fifty Favorite Climbs, The Ultimate North American Tick List"
by Mark Kroese.
Crystal Bonsai and the Archangel Route are both listed in "Sierra Classics" by John Monyier/Claude Fiddler.
'Just to name a few...
In
1997, he pulled off a huge accomplishment in the first ascent of the
Southwest Arete of the massive Tehipite Dome, "In the Niche of Time,"
VI 5.10 A4, a route taller than Yosemite's El Capitan and the steepest
big wall route in the Sierra Backcountry.
Eddie's
deep appreciation of the backcountry has been reflected in the type of
routes and venues that he has chosen to be associated with. He will
never attest to being categorized with any of the famous climbing
heroes of today or yesterday, but would rather be remembered for having
climbed some great climbs and having adventures that have inspired
others to seek their own.
Eddie
authored the Stonemasher Rock Climbing Guide to Kern Slabs (1981-82),
co-authored with Richard Leversee the Stonemasher Rock Climbing Guide
to the Kern River Canyon and Environs (1983) and wrote Sweet Nothings
(1987), a guide to trivial rock climbing pursuits in the Lower &
East Kern River Canyon.
As
well as having helped to preserve the history of the climbing activity
in the Southern Sierra, Eddie has worked as a climber with the Sequoia
National Park and the Giant Sequoia National Monument providing
technical assistance in their research of resident Southern Sierra
peregrine falcons. He is also a founding member of the Southern Sierra
Climbers' Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to
maintaining access to Southern Sierra climbing areas and helping to
preserve them for future climbing experiences.
Eddie
was one of the first local climbing guides and rock climbing
instructors in the Kern River Area. More recently, Eddie worked for
sixteen years as a retail store manager/buyer in the outdoor industry.
He manages his own rock climbing consulting service, Vertical20, aka E.C. Joe -
Vertical Logistics. Eddie currently works as a public transit
supervisor, Department of Transportation Trainer and continues to
manage this website!
